Anyone tried !linux on !android? | http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxonandroid/

@jpope That’s pretty freakin’ sweet!

That’s what I thought. I’m downloading the small Debian image now (w/XFCE) to try it out this evening. ;)

@jpope Neat project. I’ve setup a Linux chroot on my Android device before, and it’s a total PITA

@x11r5 It’s sweet because it’s sweet? That tracks.

I bet. This looks like it’ll help with setting the chroot up. Should be fun.
mvdan likes this. -

@johnnynull It’s come to the r that

I haven’t tried that project, but I have run a #linux chroot on #android: http://ur1.ca/3vwak

Now that you mention it, I should try it too. Would it run on a dual-core smartphone, or is it optimised for tablets?
-

@mvdan I don’t think that it’s necessarily optimized for tablets. My tablet is dual core and it seems to run the lighter desktops alright.

@mvdan Still, I did this more just for the hell of it. The experience of a non-touch environment using a touchscreen isn’t very pleasing IMO.

@mvdan Yeah, I tried deleting it before it PuSHed, didn’t succeed. ;)

You’re very right there. Maybe some kind of stripped-down Unity could work?
-

@mvdan The Debian img they have for download is quite old, Lenny with XFCE 4.4. http://micro.jpope.org/attachment/41550

@mvdan That’s a thought I had as well. I also tried the ubuntu unity image but it was completely unusable on my tablet. It is a full install so maybe a lighter setup would be better.

@jpope gnome or unity may be better. Probably would run a lot slower, though
-

Is that because squeeze is too big and/or needs too many resources to perform OK?
-
Embed this notice
@jpope Sorry, I missed the backlog, what tablet are you talking about?
-
Embed this notice
I’ve always hated Unity not because I’m against tablet designs, but because it’s full of crap. If it were lighter, it would probably be perfect for our androids.
-

@mvdan Not sure why they picked lenny over squeeze. I don’t think squeeze is any bigger or heavier though.

@x1101 I got a Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE quite some time back actually. ;)
-

@jrobb Yeah, unity was unusable for me. I did see the desktop but, that was about it. :/
-

@mvdan I love tablet designs, on a tablet. ;)
-
Embed this notice
@jpope so are you running GNU/Linux or Android/Linux on it?
-
Embed this notice
I’m not talking about the image size, I’m talking about RAM. AFAIK minimal lenny is ~80MB, whilst minimal Squeeze is +100MB.

Is this related (project or technology) to Ubuntu on Android? http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
-
Embed this notice
I don’t think so, no.
-
Embed this notice
@x1101 Running android and can chroot into a linux desktop on the device, so both.
-
Embed this notice
@jpope nice!
-
Embed this notice
@mmn As far as I know, the linuxforandroid project isn’t related with that at all.
-
Embed this notice
Yeah, that’s another thing. Ubuntu with Unity isn’t considered a desktop distro anymore by most ;)
